Abstract: The infra-red absorption spectrum and laser raman spectrum of crystalline potassium trichromate are reported and compared with the corresponding spectra of potassium dichromate. It is shown that the state of aggregation of acid and concentrated aqueous chromate solutions can be investigated by use of laser raman spectroscopy. In addition to C r 0 2 -and Cr,O?-, species such as H2Cr04, HCr04-and HCr,O?-have been considered to exist in Cr(V1) equilibria in aqueous solution. The Raman spectra of dilute solutions of Cr(V1) at different pH have confirmed the non-existence of the last three species in a Cr(V1) concentration range between 0.1 M and the lower detection limit of concentration (CQ 0.003 M). The proposed equilibrium, 2Cr0:-+ 2H+eCr20$-+ H@, seems to be the only one existing between pH 1 and 11. A quantitative Raman study of the influence of ionic strength on the corresponding apparent formation constant pk2 led us to the determination of the equilibrium constant at zero ionic strength, namely log Pz2= 14.85f0.04 at 25 'C. In more acidic aqueous Cr(V1) solutions, up to 12 M in HN03, preliminary investigations corroborated the presence of the trichromate and tetrachromate species.

The Raman spectra of polycrystalline Cr 3 O 8 and Cr 2 O 5 powders were measured. The powders were prepared by thermal decomposition of CrO 3 under flowing oxygen. Their composition was verified with x-ray diffraction. Raman spectra were excited with both 514.5 and 647.1 nm radiation. The spectral intensities were corrected for wavelength-dependent instrumental response. Tentative peak descriptions were made by comparison of the Cr 3 O 8 and Cr 2 O 5 spectra with reported spectra of crystalline chromium oxides.

Die Infrarot‐ und RAMAN‐Spektren der Alkalisalze von Cr3O 102− und Cr4O 132‐, sowie von CrO3 wurden registriert und zugeordnet. Die Kraftkonstanten eines modifizierten Valenzkraftfeldes wurden berechnet und mit den Kraftkonstanten in CrO 42‐, Cr2O 72‐, CrO3F−, CrO3Cl−, CrO2F2 und CrO2Cl2 verglichen. Zwischen der Größe der Valenzkraftkonstante fCrO und dem Abstand d(CrO) besteht ein fast linearer Zusammenhang. Die Deformationsschwingung λ(CrOCr) in Cr2O 72− wird neu zugeordnet. Das spektroskopische Verhalten von CrO‐Brückenbindungen wird diskutiert. Von α‐ und β‐Cs2Cr3O10 sowie Cs2Cr4O13 wurden die Elementarzellenparameter mit Hilfe von Röntgenpulveraufnahmen nach Guinier ermittelt.
