“…The first report on oxide fluorides with elements of the 14 th group from Marignac dates back to the second half of the 19 th century [1]. It took nearly nine decades until some of these compounds, such as NbO 2 F or Nb 3 O 7 F have structurally been characterized [2,3,4].…”

“…NbOF 3 has been known since the second half of the nineteenth century . A hundred years later, its presence as a byproduct was mentioned in two studies on NbO 2 F and NbF 3 and then in the gas state as a product of the decomposition of NbO 2 F. 5 MOF 3 (M = Nb, Ta) have been previously synthesized by Nieder-Vahrenholz and Schäfer, by reaction of MF 5 with oxide glass or M 2 O 5 and by Köhler et al by reaction of MF 5 with MO 2 F. The aqueous solution synthesis proposed by Frevel and Rinn, which was used by Köhler et al, leads to compounds that both contain hydroxyl defects and metal vacancies. , Consequently, in the present work, MO 2 F was prepared by solid-state synthesis from a mixture of MF 5 (Alfa Aesar, 99.9 and 99% for TaF 5 and NbF 5 , respectively) and M 2 O 5 (Alfa Aesar, 99.85 and 99.9% for Ta 2 O 5 and Nb 2 O 5 , respectively) with an excess of MF 5 (5 and 10% for NbF 5 and TaF 5 , respectively) relative to the ideal 2:1 molar ratio.…”
