Untersuchungen über die Konstitution der Gallensäuren. XXXIX. Mitteilung.

Show more

“…As steroid biochemistry progressed, the great breakthroughs were the discovery of the ring structure of steroids and bile acids at the National Institute of Medical Research in London in 1932 (25) and at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich also in 1932 (26). A heated discussion ensued whether there were three of four rings in the steroid structure and, if four rings, whether the fourth had five or six C-atoms.…”

“…[28b] (15) The greater part of financial contribution by the chemical industry to University teachers was administered in a performance-related and research-neutral fashion by the Fonds der Chemie (later the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie) through the so-called global distribution. (16) In aldol condensations of this kind the later C 2 -bridge between the ring A unit and the ring C component is supplied by the latter.…”

“…[14] This so-called Diels hydrocarbon offered persuasive support for the constitution proposed by Rosenheim and King. Once Wieland and Elisabeth Dane [15] had succeeded in satisfying themselves that the Blanc rule (4) originally used for the determination of sections of the Windaus-Wieland formulae might have exceptions in cases in which substituents might give rise to ring strain, and so did not necessarily allow infallible determination of the size of carbocyclic rings, they too departed from the original partial formula in favour of the modern generally recognized steroid formula (although with the five-membered ring D rather than chrysene's six-membered one).…”

“…In a derivative of dihydrogitoxigenin (hexahydrodigitaligenin), wherein the hydroxyl groups have all been replaced by hydrogen save the secondary OH111 (which is common to all the aglycones), rupture of the ring bearing this hydroxyl group leads to a dibasic acid (XIX) (197). On pyrolysis of this acid a ketone (XX) was obtained which, in the light of the observations of Wieland and Dane (181) on the applicability of Blanc's rule to condensed ring systems, renders probable the fixing of OH111 on ring I. '…”
