Abstract. This study was carried out on Helminthosporium species found on cereals (Avena sutiva L., Hordeum vulgare L., Triticum aestivum L., Secale cereale L.) and couch grass ( Agropycon repens (L.)PB.) The The most widespread and common Helminthosporium fungi were the following species: H. avenae Eidam was found to be very common and abundant in more than 60 per cent of the oat fields and in nearly 90 per cent of the localities that were studied throughout the country. These figures apply to seedlings as well.H. gramineum Rabenh. ex Schlecht was found frequently in more than 30 per cent of the spring barley fields and in about 55 per cent of the localities that were studied. It was very common and abundant in Ostrobothnia and the northern parts of the country and was frequent on six-rowed barley, too.H. teres Sacc. was found to be common and abundant in nearly 60 per cent of the spring barley fields and in nearly 90 per cent of the localities that were studied. These figures apply to the seedlings as well and are especially representative of observations made in the western and southern parts of the country. The fungus was more common on six-rowed than on two-rowed barlev H. tritici-repentis Died, was found to be moderately common in southern and southwestern Finland as follows: in nearly 30 per cent of the spring wheat fields and in 40 per cent of the localities studied; in 17 per cent of the winter wheat fields and in 23 the winter rye fields; for both the latter mentioned moderate abundance was observed in more than 50 per sent of the localities studied. On Agropyron repens the fungus was very common and abundant in 50 per cent of the samples and in nearly 60 per cent of the localities studied. In addition, the perfect stage of the fungi, Pyrenophora triticirepentis (Died.) Drechs. with mature ascoma and ascospores was found in about 1/4 of the samples examined throughout the country. 182H. sativum Pammel, King and Bakke was found to be moderately common and abundant in about 30 per cent of the spring barley fields and in 55 per cent of the localities studied throughout the country, being most common in southern and southwestern Finland. The fungus was more common on two-rowed than on six-rowed barley. The fungus was observed to be moderately common in 9 per cent of spring wheat fields and in nearly 20 per cent of the localities studied. In all fields H. sativum appeared sporadically also in seedlings on spring barley and spring wheat as well as on the roots of barley. The fungus was found to be moderately common also in oat fields, but only in 1972, whereas on winter wheat and winter rye its occurrence was only rare and sporadic.An undetermined Helminthosporium species, like H. gramineum or H. teres, was found to be sparce but moderately common, in about 10 per cent of the spring wheat fields and in nearly 20 per cent of the localities studied. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin viljoilla esiintyvien sienilajien, paitsi nokien ja tyvitaudinaiheuttajien, yleisyyttä ja levinneisyyttä kolmivuotisjaksona 1971-1973. Tulokset perustuvat kautta maan 315 paikkakunnalta kerättyihin 2 040 lehtinäytteeseen. Valtaosa näytteistä kerättiin viljelijäin pelloilta viljan tuleentumisvaiheessa, heinäkuun puolenvälin ja elokuunlopun välisenä aikana. Kaikki näytteet määritettiin silmävaraisesti ja mikroskooppisesti. Lisäksi tehtiin sieniviljelmiä ja saastutuskokeita tarpeen mukaan. Eri viljalajien näytteissä olivat tärkeimpiä tauteja aiheuttavia sieniä seuraavat lajit: Kaura: Helminthosporium avenaeta Eidam esiintyi yleisesti kautta maan, sen sijaan H. sativum Pammel, King & Bakke oli vähämerkityksinen. Samaa voidaan sanoa Septoria avenae Frank f. sp. avenaesta. Shaw, härmästä, Erysiphe graminis DC. ja ruosteista, sarviruosteesta, Puccinia coronala Corda ja mustaruosteesta, P. graminis Pers., joita kaikki esiintyi kauralla melko harvinaisina. Ohra: Helminthosporium-lajeja on pidettävä ohran yleisimpinä taudinaiheuttajina. H. gramineumia Rabenh. ex Schlecht., ohran viirutaudin aiheuttajaa, esiintyi yleisimpänä Pohjanmaalla ja maan pohjoisosissa, H. terestä Sacc., verkkolaikun ja lehtilaikun aiheuttajaa maan lounais- ja eteläosissa. Samoilla alueilla esiintyi myös H.sativumia, joskin vähäisemmässä määrin. H. grumineum ja H. teres olivat yleisempiä moni- kuin kaksitahoisilla lajikkeilla, päinvastoin kuin H. sativum. Rhynchosporium secalista (Oud.) J. J. Davis, ohran rengaslaikun aiheuttajaa esiintyi varsinkin monitahoisillalajikkeilla, joskus hyvinkin pahana taudinaiheuttajana. S. nodorum (Berk.) Berk. & Br. ja S. avenae Frank f. sp. triticeaa T. Johnson, esiintyi yleisimpinä maan lounais- ja eteläosissa kaksitahoisilla lajikkeilla. Samoilla alueilla esiintyi yleisenä myös härmää, Erysiphe graminis. Ruosteita, kääpiöruostetta, Puccinia hordei Otth. ja mustaruostetta, P. graminis esiintyi melko vähän. Vehnä: Septoria-lajeja yhdessä härmän kanssa on pidettävä vehnän kasvustojen yleisimpinä taudinaiheuttajina. S. nodorum oli vallitseva laji sekä kevät että syysvehnällä. S. tritici Rob. ex Desm. esiintyi vain syysvehnällä oraissa keväällä. S. avenae f. sp. triticeaa. esiintyi varsinkin kevätvehnän lehdistöissä. Härmää, Erysiphe graminis esiintyi vehnällä yleisesti, erityisen runsaana kesällä 1973. Sensijaan ruosteita, valtalajina ruskearuostetta, Puccinia recondita Rob. ex Desm., harvinaisempana keltaruostetta, P. striiformis West. ja mustaruostetta, P. graminis, tavattiin huomattavasti vähemmän. Helminthosporium-lajeja, H. tritici-repentistä. Died, ja H. sativumia. esiintyi yleisemmin kevät- kuin syysvehnällä. Ruis: Rhynchosporium secalista tavattiin yleisesti varsinkin kasvukauden alkupuolella. Septoria-lajeja, S. secalisia Prill. & Delacr. melko yleisena ja S. nodorumia harvinaisena, Helminthosporium tritici-repentisiä, härmää, Erysiphe graminis ja ruostetta, P. reconditaa. ja mustaruostetta, P. graminis esiintyi melko yleisesti ja usein yhdessä tuleentuvassa kasvustossa. Lisäksi esiintyi kautta maan kaikilla viljoilla, rukiilla tosin vähemmän kuin muilla, Fusarium-sieniä. Näistä olivat yleisimmät lajit F. culmorum (W. G. Sm.) Sacc., F. poae (Peck) Wr. ja F. avenaceum (Fr.) Sacc. sekä harvinaisempana todetut F. semiteclum Berk, et Rav., F. graminearum Schwabe, koteloaste Gibberella zeae (Schw.) Petch, ja F. nivale (Fr.) Ces. Ainakin jossakin määrin laikkutauteja aiheuttaviksi todettiin kevätviljoilla melko yleisenä esiintyvä harmaahome, Botrylis cinerea Pers. ex auct. sekä harvinaisena esiintyvät Ascochyta graminicola Sacc., A. hordei Hara, Colletotrichum graminicola (Ces.) Wils., Heterosporium avenue Oud. ja vain Lapissa todettu Selenophoma donacis var. stomaticola (Baueml.) Sprague & A. G. Johanson. Saprofyyttisiä sieniä esiintyi suuri määrä, niistä yleisimpinä Alternaria-, Cladosporium-, Epicoccum-, Cephalosporiutn- ja Acremoniella-lajeja, sekä harvinaisempana mm. Phaeoseploria-, Hendersonia-, Stemphylium-, Penicillium-, Aspergillus-, Mucor- ja Rhizopus-lajeja. Lisäksi tavattiin erittäin yleisenä Streptomyces-bakteereja, varsinkin syysviljoilla.

Within 1990-1993 strong or moderate-strong occurrence of Pyrenophora avenae was recorded in Austria, Finland, Italy, Poland and Russia. Moderate or weak-moderate incidence of the pathogen was recorded in the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Russia and Sweden, weak incidence in Finland, Italy and Poland. The highest resistance index was found in the majority of Illinois lines and a number of other oats. The quality of resistance is given by the sum of resistant and moderately resistant readings within this period. There is probably pathogenic specialization of the fungus and differences in aggressiveness exist among its populations. Oat lines such as IL86-1158, IL85-6467, IL86-4189, IL85-2069, IL86-6404 and IL86-5698 and other ones included into the EODN can be assumed to possess some Pyrenophora avenae resistance.
