Submucosal tissue oxygen tension (PtO₂) was measured in 20 patients with cervical esophagogastrostomy after resection of esophageal carcinoma, using a Clark-type oxygen electrode. The mean gastric baseline PtO₂ was 54.6 ± 10.7 mm Hg. Following ligature of the vasa brevia and the left gastroepiploic artery PtO₂ decreased to 45.8 ± 9.9 mm Hg, ligature of the left gastric artery caused a decrease to 34.2 ± 9.7 mm Hg and resection of the lesser curvature and pulling up of gastric tube led to 25.5 ± 9.0 mm Hg. Clinical value and practicability of intraoperative PtO₂ measurements could be proven.

Stelzner and Kunath [25] and Buhr et al [4] were able to demonstrate the sufficient blood supply of the whole stomach only by the right gastroomental ar tery through anastomoses of this vessel with all other gastric arteries. Yet, the importance of the PGA for the blood supply of a diseased, for example arteriosclerotic, stomach should be further studied.…”

The posterior gastric artery, a branch of the splenic artery to the posterior gastric wall, was described for the first time by Walther in 1729. It was often” recognized by many authors since, but consequently ignored by anatomical and surgical textbooks until its rediscovery and description by Suzuki et al. [Ann. Surg. 187:134–136, 1978]. The incidence of the posterior gastric artery differs between 4 and nearly 100%. All authors describe posterior gastric regions being supplied by the posterior gastric artery, but sometimes also a branch running towards the superior pole of the spleen is cited. In our study of 104 corpses we found the posterior gastric artery with an incidence of 37.5%. In one third of these cases, a branch of the posterior gastric artery to the superior pole of the spleen was also detectable. Besides these results, the course of the posterior gastric artery to the corresponding organs and the importance of this vessel for the abdominal surgeon are discussed.

Determination of the regional gastric blood flow in pigs with tracer microspheres indicates maximum blood flow in the fundus mucosa, even after dissection of the left gastric vessels. Excessive aerobic metabolism in this region was proved by measuring the arteriovenous oxygen difference. Fundus oxygen consumption was significantly depressed by cimetidine; change of blood flow distribution, a disadvantage for the seromuscular fundus layer, was inhibited.
