SUMMARY: A review of the literature on influences of physical factors on plaice and sole stresses the prominent role of water temperature in all life stages of the species. For plaice, e.g., water temperatures on the spawning grounds are inversely correlated with year-class strength, and growth depends primarily on temperatures. In many instances, however, direct and indirect effects are hard to disentangle and to quantify for use in models, e.g. for stock assessment and prediction (SAP). Hydrodynamic circulation influences the egg and larvae distributions. Existing models reveal the drift variability to be of the same magnitude as year to year variations of larval abundance just before immigration. An improved modelling of the processes could combine recent circulation and transport models incorporating physical/biological properties of the eggs and larvae. It is suggested that future research focuses on this approach. The course of irradiation during spring and its influence on mortality of the 0-groups of both species in the nursery deserves further studies if it is to be useful for SAP.

Irradiation with artificial quasi-solar light was used to investigate lethal and sublethal effects of enhanced ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on eggs, larval and juvenile stages of North Sea plaice. The irradiation experiments resembled a worst-case scenario with a synchronous occurrence of ozone depletion, sunny weather, and low water turbulence. In eggs, UV-B exposure increased mortality and induced loss of positive buoyancy. UV-B exposures for 1 or 2 days, according to the weather conditions in spring, impaired eggs only if UV-B intensities and doses exceeded those under a further 60% ozone loss. In larvae and juveniles, long-term UV-B exposures during and after metamorphosis affected ventilation rate at normoxia and ventilatory regulation during hypoxic incubations. Oxygen consumption rates of juveniles were not affected by UV-B irradiation.

The brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) is a highly abundant invertebrate in the North Sea, with its life cycle stages ranging from deep offshore spawning to shallow onshore nursery areas. To overcome the long distances between these two habitats, brown shrimp are suspected to use selective tidal stream transport (STST), moving with the cyclic tide currents towards their preferred water depths. However, it is not known which stimulus actually triggers STST behavior in brown shrimp. In this work, we determined the influence of different hyperbaric pressures on STST behavior of juvenile brown shrimp. Brown shrimp activity was recorded in a hyperbaric pressure chamber that supplied constant and dynamic pressure conditions simulating different depths, with and without a tidal cycle. Subsequent wavelet and Fourier analysis were performed to determine the periodicity in the activity data. The results of the experiments show that STST behavior in brown shrimp varies with pressure and therefore with depth. We further show that STST behavior can be initiated by cyclic pressure changes. However, an interaction with one or more other environmental triggers remains possible. Furthermore, a security ebb-tide activity was identified that may serve to avoid potential stranding in shallow waters and is 'remembered' by shrimp for about 1.5 days without contact with tidal triggers.
