Unsupervised analysis of combined lipid and coagulation data reveals coagulopathy subtypes among dialysis patients

Abstract: Dialysis is the primary treatment for patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD). While this treatment modality has made significant advances over the past years, ERSD patients still have unacceptably high rates of mortality (1). Indeed, CVD is the primary cause of mortality among patients with ESRD, accounting for about 45% of all deaths (2). Complicating this is the fact that ESRD patients Abstract Hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) are the primary means of managing end stage renal disease (ESR… Show more

“…The strategy used in our study to enable this goal investigated the plasma metabolome and lipidome to profile SCT patients. This approach resulted in the generation of complex and multidimensional data that required the use of multivariate statistical approaches to decrease dimensional space, a common approach in metabolomic and lipidomic studies 34,35 . The predictors and potential biomarkers of GVHD found in the plasma of patients pre-transplant indicate that the metabolic profile prior to bone marrow transplant is a major influence in their clinical course following transplantation and can be used to correlate immune and metabolic phenotype.…”

“…Statistical validation suggests that DSA, LPE (16:0) and PC (18:0/20:4) are putative biomarkers that should be further tested in a prospective clinical study. These biomarkers could indicate a state of increased inflammation associated with chronic kidney disease and hemodialysis in selected groups of patients compared with others(15).…”
