Unstable standard candles. Periodic light-curve modulation in fundamental mode classical Cepheids

Abstract: We report the discovery of periodic modulation of pulsation in 51 fundamental mode classical Cepheids of the Magellanic Clouds observed by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. Although the overall incidence rate is very low, about 1 per cent in each of the Magellanic Clouds, in the case of the SMC and pulsation periods between 12 and 16 d the incidence rate is nearly 40 per cent. On the other hand, in the LMC the highest incidence rate is 5 per cent for pulsation periods between 8 and 14 d, and the ov… Show more

“…Such variations are found across the HR diagram, in giant stars, such as Cepheids (e.g. Derekas et al 2017;Smolec 2017), RR Lyrae (e.g. Benkő et al 2019), and Mira-like stars (e.g.…”

“…F-mode Cepheids appear more stable, but lowamplitude periodic modulation was reported in the only Fmode Cepheid in the Kepler field, V1154 Cyg (Derekas et al 2012;Kanev et al 2015;Derekas et al 2017). Finally, Smolec (2017) reported low-amplitude periodic modulation of pulsation in 51 F-mode Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds, showing that for pulsation periods around 10 days the phenomenon may be quite common. Cycle-to-cycle variation of the radial velocities hinting at modulation were also reported (eg., Anderson 2014;Anderson 2016Anderson , 2018.…”
