Unsaturated Polyester Resin as a Nonformaldehyde Adhesive Used in Bamboo Particle Boards

Abstract: Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) with good chemical resistance, excellent mechanical properties, and formaldehyde-free shows great potentials in the wood industry. In this study, the mechanical strength, thermostability, dynamic thermomechanical property, and interfacial bonding of bamboo particle boards (BPBs) made from UPR adhesives with toluene diisocyanate (TDI) as the coupling agent were explored. The results showed that covalent bonds were formed among TDI, bamboo particles, and UPR, which could signifi… Show more

“…2 Adhesives are widely used in a range of applications and industries as diverse as automotive, 3 biomedical, 4 construction, 5 textiles, 6 and aerospace industries 7 and many aspects of our daily lives. Adhesives can be made using a wide variety of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers, such as polyvinyl alcohols, 8 polyester resins, 9 epoxy resins, 10 acrylic esters, 11 and polyurethanes. 12 Thermosetting adhesives usually have superior rigidity, solvent resistance, and thermal stability compared to thermoplastic adhesives due to the formation of highly stable crosslinked 3D networks.…”

“…[8][9][10] Owing to optimal adhesion and mechanical properties, UPs could be used to produce protective coatings for metal, wood and stone surfaces against atmospheric agents. 11,12 Although UP resins include various applications because of being economical and better functionality than some resins, there are some working flaws in these resins that make them limited to be used as structural substances. One of the flaws is degradation open to UV rays.…”
