Unrolling Post-Mortem 3D Fingerprints Using Mosaicking Pressure Simulation Technique

Abstract: Post-mortem fingerprints are a valuable biometric used to aid in the identification of a deceased individual. However, fingerprints from the deceased undergo decomposition leading to indefinite structure when compared to ante-mortem fingerprints. Moreover, the performance of the existing two-dimensional (2D) fingerprint recognition systems is still below the expected potential. These problems arise because fingerprints are generally captured by manipulating a finger against a plane. In post-mortem fingerprint … Show more

“…On a nearly 300 years old mummy, three-dimensional scanning and close-range photogrammetry have been used by Urbanová et al [ 504 ] followed by two techniques to stretch, flatten, and successfully map the three-dimensional image into a two-dimensional record. The techniques for unrolling – representing a 3D surface as a 2D image – will play a significant role both for post-mortem fingerprint recovery [ 505 ] and for livescan on-the-fly scanning.…”

“…both researchers and practitioners, especially for its use in the documentation and storage of plastic prints as opposed to traditional photographs [94], and for the acquisition of fingerprints from fingers of living/deceased individuals [62]. A 3-D SLS captures the full field of view at once, which significantly increases the scanning speed and considerably reduces noise emerging from motion.…”
