“…A part of the concern is associated with the physiological and psychological problems created by substance abuse but another important factor is the deviant behavior associated with illegal drug use (Cushman, 1971;Eckerman, et al, 1971;Forslund, 1977-78;Inciardi and Chambers, 1972;McGlothlin, ~al., 1978). It has been suggested that young people engage in deviant behavior to finance their illegal drug use and that many drug abusers become so disoriented under the influence they engage in behavior which is atypical of their "normal" behavior.…”

“…Deviant Behavior: Illegal drug use has been shown to be significantly related to deviant behavior (Cushman, 1971;Eckerman, ~al., 1971;Forslund, 1977-78;Inciardi and Chambers, 1972;McGlothlin, et al, 1978). Users of illegal drugs frequently must secure money to purchase the drugs and must at times resort to deviant behavior· to access economic resources.…”

“…Additionally, the measure of recidivism employed here is limited, as it fails to capture arrests that do not lead to a court filing or behavior, such as drug and alcohol use, which if known would result in participant failure. Moreover, previous research has shown that use of official data, such as court filings, tends to underestimate the true prevalence of criminal involvement (Inciardi & Chambers, 1972;Elliot, 1995;Inciardi, McBride, & Rivers, 1996). Therefore, future drug court research should integrate both self report data on illegal or illicit behavior, arrests, and official arrest records (court filings) in order to increase the validity and reliability of recidivism as an outcome measure.…”

“…Focusing on relative crime type distributions of narcotic drug users, they noted an overwhelming predominance of property offenses among arrests and selfreported offenses by these drug users. See, for example, Finestone (1957), Inciardi and Chambers (1972), Jacoby, et al (1973), Elliott and Ageton (1976), Johnston, et al (1976), McBride (1976), and O'Donnell, et al (1976). Other studies compare offending levels of drug users to nonusers (see note 13), and still others compare offending levels of addicts during periods of heavy and light drug use (see note 14).…”
