Unreliable usage of a single influenza virus IgM antibody assay in influenza-like illness: A retrospective study of the 2016–2018 flu epidemic

Abstract: We retrospectively analyzed serum IgM antibodies (Abs) to influenza viruses from two tertiary hospitals in Beijing from December 2016 to February 2018. Samples from 36,792 patients, aged 0–98 years, were collected and tested. Among the patients, 923 children from two winter flu seasons were assayed with both antigens and IgM Abs to Flu A and Flu B and assigned as paired groups. Another 2,340 adults and 1,978 children with only antigen tested in the 2016 and 2017 winter flu seasons were named as unpaired groups… Show more

“…Rapid influenza diagnostic test was performed using Clearview Exact Influenza A&B (ABON Biopharm Co., Ltd, Hangzhou, China) following the manufacturer’s instructions. The test strip was coated with antibodies against nucleoproteins of influenza A and B virus at different positions to distinguish antigens between influenza A and B virus (Yao et al 2019).…”

“…The positive rate of IgM antibody might varies in different virus. The low positive rate of IgM antibody also exists in children infected with influenza A, but it can reach 41–51% after influenza B infection ( 18 ). Therefore, it is necessary to collect large samples and regular data with dense detection time-points to explore the positive results of IgM antibody.…”

“…ILI may occur in population as co-infection of SARS-CoV-2 and in uenza virus during the pandemic. Sustained surveillance of ILI has been implemented by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [7][8][9] and the co-infection of in uenza viruses and SARS-CoV-2 was possible at 2019-2020 in uenza season [2,10]. According to previous study, in uenza virus-speci c antibody responses following in uenza infection rises in HA-speci c serum IgM (86 to 94%) antibodies after primary in uenza virus infection in adults [11].…”
