Unravelling the limits of the transfer of asymmetry in supramolecular polymers

Abstract: The chiroptical features of self-assembled N-annulated perylenetetracarboxamides 1–4 are investigated. These studies demonstrate that only compounds 1–3 show an efficient transfer of assymetry.

“…2a and S3 † ). 16 In the former, however, two N–H stretching bands are observed at ∼3453 and ∼3343 cm −1 due to the presence of free monomeric species and also metastable monomeric species M* formed by the intramolecular H-bonding of the inner or outer carbonyls of the amides and their outer and inner N–H ( Fig. 2 and S3 † ).…”

“…Given that bisamide synthons are present in 1 , we next analyzed the influence of intra‐ and intermolecular H‐bonds on the kinetically controlled SP [34, 35, 37–39] . Although 1 can effectively form intramolecular H‐bonds in the monomers (see “c 1 ” and “c 2 ” conformations in Figure 5a and VT‐ 1 H NMR in Figure S17), none of the two SPs incorporates intramolecular H‐bonds.…”
