“…In previous studies, the total carbohydrates of the mosquito diets were analysed via cold anthrone test [ [22] , [23] , [24] ], whereas proteins, lipids, and other nutrients also including carbohydrates were analysed by gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) through a derivatization process [ [25] , [26] , [27] , [28] ]. In other studies, a number of environmental pollutants such as pesticides were detected in the crop and midgut of the mosquitoes [ 29 ]; as well as in fruits and plants [ 30 , 31 ] by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Considering the studies mentioned above and the simplest and most convenient method for sample preparation [ 32 ], LC-MS is a most appropriate technique for determining altogether sugars and other chemical compounds in mosquito’ crops.…”

“…This is reflective of dependence on de novo fatty acid synthesis to fulfill lipid requirements that are not fulfilled by the high sugar diet (Jenkin et al, 1975;Sushchik et al, 2013;Chotiwan et al, 2022) (F) Utilization of amino acids in the blood meal by female mosquitoes. A major proportion of the blood meal amino acids are oxidized to CO 2 or excreted as uric acid while the remaining portion is converted to triglycerides (TAGs) and stored in the mosquito fat body (Lehane, 1991;Zhou et al, 2004a;Horvath et al, 2021). Deposited TAGs are used in oogenesis, metamorphosis, prolonged flight and other physiological processes.…”

“…generated during the oxidation of amino acids in a blood meal, mosquitoes were fed with labeled 15 NH 4 Cl. The labeled 15 N was traced in the whole mosquito body using electrospray ionization (ESI)-mass spectrometry and stable label isotope tracing (Horvath et al, 2021). The study showed that 15 N was rapidly incorporated into glutamine (Gln) via glutamine synthase (GS) and with the aid of other enzymes, additional N-containing metabolites were generated in the mosquito (Horvath et al, 2021).…”

“…In the last decade, GC-MS methods have been applied to address effects of stresses, including heat, freezing, and desiccation (Michaud and Denlinger, 2007;Robert Michaud et al, 2008;Koštál et al, 2011;Colinet et al, 2012;Mamai et al, 2014;Cox et al, 2017;Horvath et al, 2021). Nanospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry approaches have been used to investigate ammonia and nitrogen metabolism in Aedes aegypti (Scaraffia et al, 2006(Scaraffia et al, , 2008, as well as the changes in metabolomic profiles in response to different diets and after pathogen infection in Anopheles (Champion et al, 2017).…”
