Unmephrectomy Prevents the Ischemia-Induced Increase in Renin Activity

Abstract: Contralateral uninephrectomy attenuates unilateral ischemic injury. The present work was performed to elucidate whether the beneficial effect of uninephrectomy was associated with the modification of ischemia-induced changes in plasma or renal renin activity. A 60-min left renal artery occlusion was conducted in right nephrectomized (Nx) and sham-nephrectomized (Sham-Nx) rats. The decline in inulin clearance 48 h after ischemia was significantly less in Nx rats than in Sham-Nx animals (0.50 ± 0.10 vs. 0.052 ± … Show more

“…Therefore, the reduced PRA level in rats with MIϩNX may be due to a feedback mechanism. Furthermore, it has been reported that NX prevents the increase in PRA induced by renal ischemia through reduced renal cortical renin content (26), and therefore this mechanism may also play a role in the reduction of the PRA level in this model.…”

“…Other studies show that contralateral nephrectomy offers partial protection against ischaemic renal injury [19,20]. Unilateral nephrectomy might increase the urinary volume in rats and nephrectomy followed by RIR can cause a substantial increase in this volume [19,20]. Furthermore, RIR‐induced injury results in decreased renal blood flow and increased urine output [21].…”

“…UNT inhibits increases in plasma renin activity caused by ischemia (12). Renin also stimulates the production of angiotensin II, which activates TGF-(3-mediated fibrosis (3,25,34,35).…”
