Abstract: This article proposes a global bibliometric overview of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs) publications in the Scopus database during 1985-2015 at the country level. The article is structured as follows. The first section provides an introduction and overview of papers on the publication and patent activity in field of UAVs. “…We believe it is suitable to test our hypotheses for several reasons. First, as a newly emerged field, UAV technology has attracted increasing worldwide attention (Kotsemir, 2019). Second, UAV technology has the characteristics of high knowledge-intensive, rapid updating of technology, high complexity and frequent exchanges of knowledge (Kim et al , 2016).…”

“…Derwent Innovation Index database covers the data of patents issues by many authorities and more than 100 countries, tracks a large amount of activities in the emerging and growing markets and has been widely used in previous research (Zhang and Tang, 2017; Wang and Yang, 2019). This empirical setting is apt for the reason that UAV industry is a typical knowledge-intensive sector, the update of technology is quick, and we can observe numerous events of knowledge inflows and outflow activities (Kim et al , 2016b; Kotsemir, 2019), which is quite suitable for our study.…”

“…Algumas técnicas como as análises bibliométrica e cientométrica, têm sido empregadas para se conhecer os temas das pesquisas realizadas, bem como a transformação ou desenvolvimento das aplicabilidades sobre os mais variados temas. No entanto, a bibliografia acadêmica ainda carece de uma análise bibliométrica aprofundada das publicações sobre veículos aéreos não tripulados (KOTSEMIR, 2019).…”
