Unmanned Aerial Vehicle – Efficient mapping tool available for recent research in polar regions

Abstract: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) have technical capabilities to extended usage in various fields of science. The existing UAVs are to be relatively easily accessible in the near future. It is possible to equip them with different sensors but there are still some usage limitations. This paper focuses on demonstrating UAVs usage for research in polar regions. The research in polar regions is very specific and, due to harsh climate, limits the field work with UAVs. The options and limitations are presented in a cas… Show more

“…It will take substantial training or partnerships with outside experts in the drone field for the growers to gather correct data. Drones have changed how data is collected in almost every business, and they're just going to get better and more common in the coming years [38,39].…”

“…For the Arctic, obtaining adequate data of remote sensing from space is complicated by the low quantity of satellite observations and particularly harsh weather conditions. Due to this, for the monitoring of geodynamical processes on the Earth's surface including the Arctic areas, UAVs have become commonly used [40,42,67,[69][70][71].…”

“…The main problems of using an UAV at high latitudes of the Arctic are frequent strong winds as well as the insufficient number of GPS satellites in view in polar regions. For adequate functioning, not less than six satellites are required [71]. The latter problem caused the loss of three UAVs by the authors' colleagues.…”
