“Unknown Material”? Georges Canguilhem, French Philosophy and Medicine

Abstract: In the introduction to the Normal and the Pathological, Canguilhem's doctoral dissertation in medicine, defended in 1943, he claimed, "philosophy is a reflection for which all unknown material [matière étrangère] is good." In this case the "unknown material" was precisely medicine; "a technique or art at the crossroads of several sciences" which was supposed to provide "an introduction to concrete human problems."
