The UNIX system is a computer operating system and a collection of software tools created at AT&T Bell Laboratories in the early 1970s. UNIX is a registered trademark of UNIX System Laboratories, Inc. Today the UNIX system is among the most popular and widely used computing environments, and is found on computers ranging from laptops through supercomputers. This article discusses the history and development of the UNIX system, its structure, its influence, its strengths and weaknesses as a software engineering environment, and its future.
