Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to examine recent trends that have affected UniversityPresses. The increased reliance on digital resources and fiscal constraints within higher education has forced University Presses to re-evaluate their position with the scholarly communication system. Responses include an increased focus on partnerships, new forms of publication, changing business models, and better meeting customers' needs. Design/Methodology/Approach -The authors have reviewed publications on UniversityPresses from the last five years and added their viewpoints on current and future trends.Findings -University Presses must adapt to resource scarcity and current trends in scholarly communication to remain viable.Practical Implications -Both University Presses and academic libraries may gain insights on how to meet the needs of researchers and scholars within a changing environment.Originality/Value -This paper summarizes and evaluates a broad spectrum of research on University Presses.

This article investigates the decision process used by university presses when selecting or deselecting e-book vendors for academic libraries. It focuses on three research questions: (1) which vendors' university presses worked with; (2) how university presses used different vendors; and (3) why university presses worked or did not work with certain vendors. A series of one-on-one interviews were conducted with 19 participants from 18 different university presses in the US. Findings show participants use a core of vendors identified as the 'Big Four' plus several other 'optional' vendors. The reasons that encourage and discourage presses to work with certain vendors are investigated and reveal a mutual reinforcement cycle that explains the process by which the Big Four vendors became both the main distribution vendors for university presses and the main providers for academic libraries for e-books in humanities and social science. The research also discusses efforts made by several university presses and other vendors to challenge the dominance of the Big Four.

Kent Chemical Products (Kent) is a leading global specialty-chemical company that operates internationally. It is a technology-driven company that gains a competitive advantage through its scientific expertise and product development. Kent has followed an expansion strategy by mainly acquiring or venturing with other companies. Kent has grown fast but has not been able adapt its internal operations in order to appropriately manage the growth. Hence, the company's main challenge is to manage this transition successfully. Due to a potential economic downturn as well as internal problems, Luis Morales, president of Kent Chemical International (KCI) aims to find a solution to create a unified global company.
