University of Rome Carbon-14 Dates X

Abstract: This list includes age measurements made from November 1970 to December 1971. All archaeologic and geologic samples come from Italian territory. Laboratory equipment, largely unchanged but expanded and technically improved, was previously described (Alessioet al., 1970a). Charcoal and wood samples underwent standard pretreatment by boiling with 5 to 10% HCl;α-labeled samples were given additional leaching with 6% NH4OH or 0.2N NaOH.

“…The CI eruption was followed by minor explosive episodes (Orsi et al, 1996;Cole et al, 1994). The NYT eruption, 14 C dated to about 12k yr BP (Alessio et al, 1973), and recently 39 Ar/ 40 Ar dated at 15k yr BP (Deino et al, 2004), is an important phreatomagmatic episode linked to the origin of the present Campi Flegrei caldera (Lirer et al, 1987). Post-NYT Campi Flegrei activity is represented by a good deal of minor purely magmatic and phreatomagmatic episodes with vents located inside the caldera; the last eruptive event formed the Monte Nuovo cone in AD 1538.…”

“…Gray color indicates products from eruptions at Ischia (text in italics to the left of the column) and Campi Flegrei (underlined text to the left of the column) However, the CI recognition and its age with respect to that of the Breccia Museo are controversial issues (Rosi and Sbrana 1987;Lirer et al 1991;Scandone et al 1991;Deino et al 1992;Perrotta and Scarpati 1994;Melluso et al 1995;Orsi et al 1996). The first controversy derives from the large amount of 14 C data available for the paleosols underlying and overlying the Breccia Museo (Alessio et al 1971(Alessio et al , 1973(Alessio et al , 1974Lirer et al 1991), which give scattered results (CI younger than 40 ka to younger than 21.3 ka). The 14 C age determinations are in contrast with the K-Ar age of 38.5-38.2 ka and the 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age of 37 ka, both measured on sanidine from the Breccia Museo at Monte di Procida (Cassignol and Gillot 1982;Deino et al 1992), as well as with the 40 Ar/ 39 Ar average data of 39.2 ka from CI sarridines (De Vivo et al 2001).…”
