University–industry collaboration and firm innovation: an empirical study of the biopharmaceutical industry

Abstract: Existing research has shown that university–industry collaboration (UIC) helps a firm achieve superior innovation outcomes. However, little is known about how UIC affects firm innovation when considering interfirm alliances. In this paper, we examine the influence of UIC on firm innovation performance by considering the interfirm alliance network. Based on a panel of 285 biopharmaceutical firms across the world over a thirty-year period from 1985 to 2014, we find that UIC enhances firm innovation performance. … Show more

“…This Institutional Investor and Sustainable University Funding Research Model indicates a new angle of research in institutional investors and alternative funding for universities where more research is required to explore the possibility and process for implementing the model. Although several studies advocated university-industry collaboration [7,[88][89][90][91], this research extends new possibilities in the literature to bridge the gap between industry and educational institutions, bringing greater opportunity for institutions to invest and develop alternative funding for educational institutions for quality education.…”

“…When biopharmaceutical industries were first established, most were standalone companies. Today however, because of the resource intensiveness needed for R&D, the benefits of transnational trade and collaboration among academics, industries, government institutions, and regulators have proved to be a rewarding and cost-saving approach to achieving enterprises’ ambitions to build ecosystems that enable innovation ( Tian et al, 2021 ). Collaboration brings together individual company strengths and experiences, enables the sharing of equipment and knowledge, and facilitates easier market entry.…”

“…However, as the level of participation deepens, companies can indeed derive benefits from UI collaboration. Furthermore, Tian et al (2022) their findings revealed that UI collaboration can improve a company's innovation performance. However, it is important to note that having more alliances with other companies can hinder the positive impact of UI collaboration on corporate innovation.…”

“…In other words, UI collaboration is essential for forming enterprise IC. UI collaborative behaviors, such as knowledge transfer, knowledge creation, talent exchange and training, social network connection and academic engagement with industries, can aid in the accumulation of corporate IC (Gerdsri and Manotungvorapun, 2021;Perkmann et al, 2021;Tian et al, 2022).…”
