This paper presents a computationally efficient soft detection scheme for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed scheme adopts joint iterative detection and decoding (JIDD) methods for their capacity limiting performances. In addition, the minimum mean square error parallel interference cancellation (MMSE-PIC)-based detection scheme is used for soft information exchange. We propose a number of techniques to reduce the computational complexity, while keeping almost the same performance as the conventional ones. First, a technique is proposed to approximate the Gram matrix to a constant valued diagonal matrix. This proposal can lead to elimination of complex matrix inversion process and multiple layer dependent estimations, resulting in huge complexity reduction. Second, compact equations to estimate soft-symbol values for M-ary (quadrature amplitude modulation) QAM are derived. From the investigation example of 2 8 -QAM in this paper, this proposal showed more than two orders of less computations compared to the conventional scheme. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve approximating performance to the conventional method with a largely reduced computational complexity.

Soft Iterative Decoding Algorithms for Rateless Codes in Satellite Systems

The satellite system is one of the most efficient means for broadcasting due to its wide service coverage as well as the fact that it can provide high data rate services by using high frequency bands. However, there are a number of problems in the satellite system, such as a long round trip delay (RTD) and heterogeneity of the channel conditions of the earth stations. Even though utilizing adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) is almost mandatory for the satellite systems using high frequency bands due to the serious rain fading, the long RTD makes it difficult to quickly respond to channel quality information, resulting in a decrease in the efficiency of ACM. A high heterogeneity of earth stations caused by a wide service coverage also makes it difficult to apply a uniform transmission mode, and thus satellite systems require receiver-dependent transmission modes. A rateless code can be an effective means to compensate for these disadvantages of satellite systems compared to terrestrial wireless systems. This paper presents soft iterative decoding algorithms for efficient application of rateless codes in satellite systems and demonstrates that rateless codes can be effectively used for hybrid automatic repeat request schemes.

A number of study results demonstrated that the performance of the coded MIMO scheme can be highly enhanced by incorporating iterative decoding and detection scheme by exchanging soft information between the symbol detector and decoder. One of the critical problems of these iterative schemes is an exponential order of the complexity with increase of number of bits in a symbol and the number of antennas. In this paper, we present an efficient iterative detection and decoding scheme for MIMO systems with phase shift keying (PSK) modulation schemes and low density parity check (LDPC) codes. In order to reduce the complexity by the number of antennas, we adopt minimum mean square error (MMSE) based linear detection scheme with parallel interference cancellation. In addition, soft bit estimation is made only with a single distance calculation per bit, with approximating performance to the maximum likelihood detection 1 .
