Universal Safety Design (USD) and Sustainability: Comparison of Guidelines between Universal Design (UD) and USD

Abstract: Universal Design (UD) has contributed to enhancing the quality of life through design for all. This study aims to compare the users’ subjective scores for UD guidelines and Universal Safety Design (USD) guidelines. A questionnaire survey was performed to get information on the 165 users’ subjective scores for design guidelines implementing UD or USD. Results show that USD guidelines have extensibility in fairness, flexible work, and sustainability perspectives. UD guidelines show a low correlation coefficient … Show more

“…The MSDs problem of older workers is a critical issue to be solved in the shipbuilding industry in terms of the quality of life of the worker and the cost of compensation for industrial accidents, and systematic measures are required. There should be continuous efforts to expand the current notion of 'universal design', which regards ease of life for the elderly, into 'universal safety and design', which allows elderly workers to do their job in comfort and safety [27,28]. It makes sense to maintain health and prevent MSDs in older workers who are still physically and mentally fit from the social perspective since they are a primary source of the workforce in the era of an aged population.…”

“…Safe and healthy working conditions are a crucial indicator for "decent work" [45]. Furthermore, occupational safety and health are essential for a sustainable society where workers can enjoy healthy and productive lives during and after work [46,47]. A mismatch between workers' capacity and work demands increases the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, poor productivity, and occupational injuries [41].…”

“…According to Maywald & Riesser, in recent years, the term "sustainability" has been applied to a wide range of products and activities [6]. Economic growth, environmental protection, and social equality are the three pillars of sustainability [3].…”

“…This can be seen as an ultimate goal of UD. Baek and Jeong (2021), referred to UD as the design of environments and products that is to be used by all types of people to the largest extent that is possible without adaptation or the need for a specialized design [3]. There has been a paradigm shift however as UD has extended its concept of consideration to include all those that are socially vulnerable when looking at it from the human rights perspective.…”
