Universal fluctuations in the bulk of Rayleigh–Bénard turbulence

Abstract: We present an investigation of the root-mean-square (rms) temperature σ T and the rms velocity σ w in the bulk of Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence, using new experimental data from the current study and experimental and numerical data from previous studies. We find that, once scaled by the convective temperature θ * , the value of σ T at the cell centre is a constant, i.e. σ T,c /θ * ≈ 0.85, over a wide range of the Rayleigh number (10 8 Ra 10 15 ) and the Prandtl number (0.7 P r 23.34), and is independent of the su… Show more

“…the onset of buoyancy convection in systems uniformly heated from below and cooled from above, corresponding to the so-called Rayleigh-Bénard paradigm. This type of convection is known to produce such a variegated set of different structures and bifurcations that it has been considered for a long time as a universal testbed for the study of the typical properties of dissipative systems and their related evolution (Crespo del Arco et al 1988;Crespo Del Arco & Bontoux 1989;Clever & Busse 1993, 1994Gelfgat 1999;Delgado-Buscalioni, Crespo del Arco & Bontoux 2001;Xi, Lam & Xia 2004;Sun et al 2005;Lappa 2009;Xie et al 2019).…”
