Units in the cerebral cortex of the anaesthetized rat and the correlations between their discharges

Abstract: 1. Extracellular records have been made of spontaneous unitary activity in the cortex of the anaesthetized rat. If the animal is anaesthetized with sufficient urethane almost to abolish reflex contractions of leg muscles when a hind paw is stimulated, two types of spontaneously active unit are found. One type of unit is found in all areas of the cortex which have been studied, and gives high voltage discharges. The other has only been found in restricted areas of cortex and gives low voltage discharges. 2. The… Show more

“…As a result of observations on the synchrony of discharges in certain cortical units (Holmes & Houchin, 1966), we were led to suspect that patterning existed in the discharge of each unit. Some mathematical functions have been computed on the discharge of single units and the patterning elucidated in this way forms the subject of the present publication.…”

“…In conclusion, the forecast made in a previous publication (Holmes & Houchin, 1966) APPENDIX The data consist of a sequence of time intervals. All the statistical functions except the serial correlation coefficients are defined as sums of delta functions, with the notation of the previous paper (Holmes & Houchin, 1966).…”
