United States earthquakes, 1963

Abstract: Among the commercial agencies on the West Coast rendering valuable services are telephone, power, oil, railroad, and especially insurance companies. Certain concerns interested in the manufacture of earthquake-resistant building materials are also active, together with various organizations of structural engineers and architects. In other parts of the country the Jesuit Seismological Association with headquarters at St. Louis University collects information in the central Mississippi Valley area (Rev. Dr. Vict… Show more

“…An intensity was not reported from the SEW site because no inhabited structures existed in the area; however, the surrounding area within two blocks of the site had intensity reports of IV or less. It is assumed that the probable intensity at the SEW site, which is located on rock, would have been IV or less (von Hake and Cloud, 1967), sites HAR and HIA were assigned a MM intensity of VIE; at site HIG, MM intensity values of VI were reported, and sites JEF and LIN experienced intensity V ( fig. 2).…”

“…The epicenter of the 1965 earthquake was about 25 km south of Seattle (Algermissen and Harding, 1965). It caused widespread damage, although the maximum MM intensity of VIII was concentrated in the Harbor Island and West Seattle areas (von Hake and Cloud, 1967). Mullineaux and others (1967) suggested that Harbor Island and West Seattle may have also experienced higher intensities than surrounding areas during the 1949 earthquake.…”

“…A group of 600 earthquakes, referred to as the Clover Mountain earthquakes, occurred in the East-West seismic belt near the Nevada-Utah border In 1966 and 1967 ( Figure 41) (Beck, 1970); the largest event of this series had a magnitude of M=6.1 (von Hake and Cloud, 1966) and was located about 210 km east of the Site. The relocation of the main shock and selected aftershocks in this series (Rogers and others, 1983b) using a joint epicenter method indicates that the earthquakes occurred along a north-northeast-trending zone.…”
