United States drought of 2007: historical perspectives

Abstract: The impacts of the United States drought of 2007 to both society and ecosystems were substantive and included multi-billion dollar agricultural losses and the second worst wildfire season on record. The purpose of this paper is to place the 2007 drought in historical perspective relative to the climate record from 1895-2007 to increase our understanding of this hazard and contribute to improvements of drought mitigation plans. We compared the 2007 drought historically against the climatic record (1895-2007) us… Show more

“…In 2007, cotton growth was severely depressed by drought conditions experienced by much of the southeastern United States. (Maxwell and Soulé, 2009). Several changes were made to the planter before the 2007 cropping season to improve seed placement.…”

“…Severe drought conditions were reached within a matter of months rather than a matter of years as increasing demand and drought coincided. Maxwell and Soulé () noted that the 2007 drought was not exceptionally severe in comparison with other droughts since the 1930s; however, increases in population and water demand have resulted in less severe meteorological droughts having significant and longer lasting hydrological impacts.…”

“…The increase in water demand over time, coupled with drought, has produced increasingly widespread water scarcity in states along the Atlantic Coast. Recent examples include a multiyear drought that persisted from the late‐1990s until 2002 (Carbone and Dow, ; Weaver, ; Kauffman and Vonck, ), which was followed by a second multiyear drought in the Southeast U.S. from 2006 to 2008 that resulted in widespread disruptions in water supply systems and over $1 billion in agricultural losses (Maxwell and Soulé, ; Seager et al ., ). The occurrence of back‐to‐back multiyear events raised drought to a priority topic in at least two regards.…”

“…Snowfall is infrequent but we encountered some snow during field work at higher elevations. In the drought year of 2007 (Maxwell and Soulé 2009), Heflin received only 69 cm of precipitation and some normally perennial streams were dry. In contrast, Heflin received 191 cm of precipitation during a wet year in 2009.…”
