Unitarity and monojet bounds on models for DAMA, CoGeNT, and CRESST-II

Abstract: If dark matter interacts with quarks or gluons, the mediator of these interactions is either directly accessible at the LHC or is so heavy that its effects are encoded in contact operators. We find that the self-consistency of a contact operator description at the LHC implies bounds on the mediator scale stronger than those found from missing energy searches. This translates into spin-independent elastic scattering cross-sections at a level < ∼ 10 −41 cm 2 , with direct implications for the DAMA, CoGeNT, and C… Show more

“…New ways of running the searches and expressing the bounds will be a necessity, the main options being simplified and, indeed, benchmark models (see e.g. [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] for previous examples).…”

“…While this approach has been very useful in obtaining model independent bounds on DM properties from direct and indirect searches, it has been shown [1][2][3] that it can be misleading when considering the complementarity of these searches with DM searches in high-energy colliders.…”

“…1 ii) The sensitivity of current direct search experiments is high enough that DM-nucleon interactions via a Higgs boson exchange are now being probed. The SDM is a simplified model that can be used to parametrise these bounds since the DM candidate has tree-level interactions with the Higgs boson.…”

“…That particle will be coupled to quarks and/or gluons, and, if kinematically possible, may be resonantly produced at the collider. In this regime, the EFT is no longer valid [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] and the question is whether the actual limits can be stronger or weaker. The regions with the largest cross-section are both at low center of mass energy (due to parton distribution -1 -…”
