Unique UV absorbance for triphenylimidazole‐based polymer

Abstract: In this study, a novel vinyl polymer containing 2,4,5-triphenylimidazole side groups was synthesized through conventional radical polymerization, which possesses the characteristic of temperature-dependent absorbance in the near-ultraviolet (UV) spectral region. The linear dependence of UV absorbance on temperature was confirmed for the polymer both in solid state and in solution by experiment and also supported by the results of theoretical investigation.

“…In this case, TPI is chosen as model compound for simplification of the study because the structures of TPI and the arylimidazole moieties in dyads 3 and 4 are not exactly identical. As can be seen, the characteristic absorption band of the TPI is observed at 310 nm, which can be ascribed to the electronic transition from HOMO to LUMO + 2 according to our theoretical results . On the other hand, CuTPP displays a strong Soret band at 414 nm and Q‐bands at 538 nm (Fig.…”

“…Temperature-dependent absorbance for polymer In our previous paper [8], we have found that the polymer based on triarylimidazole possessed a characteristic of temperature-dependent absorbance in the near-UV spectral region, which was verified by experimental and theoretical investigation. In the present study, the temperature-dependent UV-Vis absorption spectra of poly (DVT) (M n = 17,600 g/mol, M w /M n = 1.08) were also measured.…”

“…[1][2][3] The chemical flexibility of this class of compounds allows the preparation of a large variety of related structures and, consequently, the tailoring of the chemiluminescent, [4] photochromic, [5,6] redox, [7] temperature-dependent UV-Vis absorbance, [8] and biological properties. [9][10][11] The chemiluminescence of 2,4,5-triphenylimidazole was first reported by Radziszewski in 1877, [12] who found that this compound emitted a yellow light when it reacted with oxygen in the presence of strong base.…”
