Unique role of β-cyclodextrin in modifying aggregation of Triton X-114 in aqueous solutions

Abstract: The effect of b-cyclodextrin (b-CD) on the aggregation behavior of a nonionic surfactant, Triton X-114 ((1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenyl-polyethylene glycol), in aqueous solutions has been studied as a function of temperature by means of turbidity, dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and rheo-small angle light scattering (rheo-SALS). The Triton X-114 (TX-114) solutions possess unique structural variations and display special aggregate transitions upon b-CD addition. In contr… Show more

“…Therefore, β-cyclodextrin is able to form host-guest complexes with most surfactants' hydrophobic tails into cyclodextrin's cavities. Reported by Xu et al [21] confirmed that the accumulation of β-cyclodextrin to the non-ionic surfac-tant solutions leads to growth of the aggregates instead of their dissociation. The solutions undergo micellar growth and micelle to vesicle transitions.…”

“…Beyond 20 mg L -1 , the extraction efficiency of phenol decreases. It is speculated that if enough β-cyclodextrin is added to the micellar surfactant solution, all of the surfactant will eventually be complexed, resulting in the total breakdown of the micelles [32]. Thus, excess phenol is retained in the aqueous phase, resulting in a decrease of extraction efficiency of phenol in the CPE systems.…”

“…Low-molecular-weight HA can be produced by -irradiation or enzymatic degradation. 47,48 HA is abundantly distributed in natural ECM and is degraded by the enzyme hyaluronidase. In the native ECM, HA absorbs large amounts of water and expands to form a loose hydrated network, serving as a space filler, lubricant and osmotic buffer.…”

“…The characteristic length (a c ) of the CMP and CNP aggregates was determined using Debye-Bueche plots (I À0.5 vs. q 2 ). 30,31 A linear t to the data plotted in the Debye-Bueche format was calculated in the ow or vorticity direction using the method of least squares. The slope and intercept of the linear t were used to calculate a characteristic length [a c ¼ (slope/intercept) 0.5 ] for the aggregates at various conditions.…”
