Unique Direct and Indirect Effects of Impulsivity-Like Traits on Alcohol-Related Outcomes via Protective Behavioral Strategies

Abstract: In the present study, we examined whether the use of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) mediates the effects of impulsivity-like traits on alcohol-related problems using a sample of 278 college students. Validating the 5-factor model of impulsivity, we showed that each impulsivity-like trait had a distinct pattern of relationships with PBS and/or alcohol outcomes. Further validating the 3-factor model of PBS (Limiting/Stopping Drinking, Manner of Drinking, and Serious Harm Reduction), we found that each ty… Show more

“…To address this concern, age was covaried for all analyses which used this measure. Studies have found correlations between the B-YAACQ and other non-age-specific alcohol use consequences measures (i.e., Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, Rutgers Alcohol Problem Index) to range from .70 to .79 (Kahler et al, 2008;Pearson et al, 2012;Verster et al, 2009).…”

“…Replication 3: Impulsivity-like traits (Pearson et al, 2012b) In a sample of 278 college student drinkers, in separate models, researchers found that Manner of Drinking PBS use was a significant (or "marginally" significant) mediator of the associations of each impulsivity-like trait on alcohol use; double mediation through Manner of Drinking PBS use and alcohol use on alcohol-related problems was also observed. In a combined model in which other impulsivitylike traits were controlled, premeditation, perseverance, and sensation seeking were each significantly associated with PBS use, which in turn was associated with alcohol outcomes.…”

“…As noted in a comprehensive review of the literature (Pearson, 2013), several of these associations have only been examined in a single study: age at first use (Palmer et al, 2010), self-regulation (D'Lima et al, 2012), impulsivity-like traits (Pearson et al, 2012b), depressive symptoms (Martens et al, 2008), and conscientiousness (Martens et al, 2009). Therefore, these findings warrant replication in an independent sample.…”

“…Reviews have demonstrated that PBS use is robustly negatively associated with a range of alcohol outcomes including alcohol use and ARC (Pearson, 2013;Prince et al, 2013). PBS use has also been examined as a mediator of the association between a wide range of variables and alcohol outcomes including impulsivity-like traits (Pearson et al, 2012b), conscientiousness (Martens et al, 2009), age at first alcohol use (Palmer et al, 2010), selfregulation (D'Lima et al, 2012), and depressive symptoms (Martens et al, 2008).…”
