“…The malignant alteration of IPs has been widely recognized [1,4,8,22,23,[42][43][44][59][60][61][62][63][64][65]. Of all carcinomas associated with IPs, 61% are synchronous and 39%, metachronous [66].…”

“…Malignancy was found to be associated with bilateral inverted papilloma, histologic multicentricity [521], a predominance of mature squamous epithelium, the presence of all three epithelial types (metaplastic squamous, mature squamous, and cylindrical), severe hyperkeratosis, a mitotic index greater than or equal to 2 per high-power field (HPF), absence of inflammatory polyps among the papillomas, an abundance of plasma cells, an absence of neutrophils, the presence of bone invasion, the absence of inflammatory polyp, increase in the ratio neoplastic epithelium : stroma, increase in hyperkeratosis, the presence of squamous epithelial hyperplasia, increase in the mitotic index, and a decrease in the number of eosinophils [511, 522]. Clinically benign behavior was related to the presence of inflammatory polyp and the absence of hyperkeratosis, predominantly mucinous tumors, a mitotic index less than 1 per HPF, a ratio of neoplastic epithelium/connective tissue stroma greater than or equal to 6, and the presence of inflammatory polyps among the papillomas [89, 511].…”

“…The rate of malignant transformation of IPs has ranged from 5% to 32%, being less than 10% in most series 16 23 24 26 28 29 30 31 32. The criteria for the diagnosis of in-situ and invasive squamous cell carcinoma arising or associated with IP are similar to those used for conventional squamous cell carcinoma arising in other regions of the head and neck.…”
