“…The use of traps containing attractants and either insecticides or chemosterilants for pest control has been proposed for a number of insect species (Steiner et aI. [1965]; La Brecque and Meifert [1966]; Goodenough and Snow [1977]; Meifert et al [1978]; Hargrove and Vale [1979]; Snow et al [1982]; House [1982]; Langely and Coates [1982]). Some of these applications used pheromone traps, others used non-sex-specific odor-baited traps; none used any of the combinations of methods examined here.…”

“…During the course of routine monitoring of stable fly populations in eastern Nebraska (Taylor et al., ), we observed high numbers of stable flies caught from traps placed in proximity to grasslands and crop fields on which cattle manure slurry (a mixture of cattle manure and urine, water and accumulated organic waste) had been recently applied (Schils & Kok, ). Volatile compounds isolated from bovine manure slurry may be useful for improving the efficacy of trap catches by the deployment of mass trapping technologies with attractant‐baits for stable flies (Meifert et al., ).…”

“…Traps can be used for both surveillance and local reduction of stable ßy populations (Williams 1973, Meifert et al 1978, Ruff 1979, Gersabeck et al 1982, Gersabeck and Merritt 1983, Hogsette 1984, Pickens and Hayes 1984. Most stable ßy traps are modiÞca-tions of the adhesive-coated translucent Þberglass panel (Alsynite) trap developed by Williams (1973).…”
