Introduction. Oral health is considered as one of the essential components of the overall health of every individual. Maintaining oral health is a gradual process that requires commitment. Children who require special care such as hearing impairment experience difficulty in maintaining oral health primarily due to communication difficulties. This study is aimed at using different interventions to evaluate the improvement of oral hygiene in hearing impaired children. Materials and Methods. Fifty-nine children were recruited in this study that were allocated randomly into each group with twenty children as follows: group 1: pictorial, group 2: video, and group 3: control. Mean plaque and gingival scores were noted before and after the use of different interventions. Oral hygiene was categorized as “excellent,” “good,” and “fair.” Gingival health was categorized as “healthy,” “mild gingivitis,” and “moderate gingivitis.” Results. Thirty-four children (57.6%) were from 12-13 years of age bracket, and 25 (42.4%) belonged to 14-16 years of age. Regarding gender, there were 37 (62.7%) males and 22 (37.3%) females. About comparison of mean gingival and plaque scores before and after interventions in each group, a significant difference was found in group 1 ( p < 0.001 ) and group 2 ( p < 0.001 ), as compared to group 3 where the difference in scores was not significant ( p > 0.05 ). Conclusion. Maintaining oral health requires the compliance of individuals to perform different methods of preventive dentistry, such as tooth brushing and use of dental floss. The use of different oral hygiene educational interventions such as pictorial and video methods have been proven and useful for hearing impaired children in improving oral health.

De acordo com o Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), 9 milhões de brasileiros apresentam deficiência auditiva, de dificuldade até a ausência total de audição. O objetivo é discutir sobre a atenção odontológica prestada à pessoa surda, desde oatendimento clínico, até a educação em saúde bucal. As buscas foram realizadas nas bases de dados Lilacs, Medline e SciELO, e as palavras-chaves foram Comunicação, Línguas de Sinais, Odontologia, Relações Dentista-Paciente e Surdez. Foram selecionados artigos que correlacionavam a prática odontológica, o ensino da odontologia e a assistência em saúde bucal do paciente surdo. Foram incluídos 15 artigos dos quais foram divididos nas seguintes categorias: atendimento clínico, avaliação das condições bucais, cultura surda na educação de graduandos e profissionais da odontologia, educação em saúde bucal, percepção sobre saúde bucal e atendimento odontológico. Após a revisão percebeu-se que há uma escassez de estudos relacionando odontologia e surdez, além de despreparo das instituições de ensino superior no manejo do paciente surdo. Abstract According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), 9 million Brazilians have some hearing impairment, since some hearing loss to complete deafness. This study aims to discuss the dental assistance offered to the deaf person, since the dental appointment until oral health education. The research happened on the databases Lilacs, Medline and SciELO, the keywords were Communication, Sign Language, Dentistry, Dentist-Patient Relations, and Deafness. Studies that related the dental practice or dentistry teaching e oral health assistance of deaf patients were included. Fifteen articles were included and divided into categories: clinical care, assessment of oral conditions, deaf culture on the education of students and dentistry professionals, oral health education, and perception about oral health and clinical care. There are just a few studies matching the dentistry and deafness, also the education institutions of dentistry are not ready to assist the deaf patient and need to expose their students to the deaf culture. The article presents modern requirements for the provision of medical care in the context of a socio-cultural approach, in which restrictions are seen as the result of discrimination by society, not the human condition. The concept of "universal design" in all spheres of human life acquires special significance. The deaf community is seen as a linguistic and cultural minority with its own language (sign language) and culture (deaf culture), so it is very important to offer solutions and approaches to establish quality communication between sign language patients and doctors, junior medical staff and thus ensure an inclusive approach. in the field of health care. Given the urgency of the problem, the aim of the article is to analyze the theoretical and clinical aspects of the problem of accessibility of medical (dental) services for patients with severe hearing impairment (sign language) and identify effective methods to meet their special communication needs. Methods of theoretical analysis of literature sources and results of modern research presented in electronic scientific publications included in scientometric databases PubMed, Index Copernicus, Ulrich's Periodicals, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus, Medline, etc .; examination, treatment and counseling of a sign language patient within the framework of surgical preparation for orthopedic prosthetics on the basis of the Department of Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of NMU named after OO Worshipers. The results of the study give grounds to draw the following conclusions: analysis of professional literature, clinical cases indicate the urgency of the problem of communication of deaf (sign language) patients and dentists, setting benchmarks for reforming the health care system in accordance with modern socio-cultural approaches; the main methods of communication between a dentist and a patient with severe hearing impairment are characterized: through a sign language interpreter; by means of written speech; by using a jotting-algorithm with gestures required during standard dental manipulations; determined that the use of the jotting-algorithm promotes effective communication with sign language patients, taking into account the peculiarities of the dentist and the special communication needs of such patients.
