Uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, Argentinian experience

Abstract: The acceptance of uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for minor and major thoracic procedures is growing in South America. This study presents the experience with uniportal VATS in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In a retrospective study, 181 patients were operated with uniportal VATS technique between December 2013 and October 2016. Uniportal procedures included minor and major procedures.Uniportal VATS were analyzed en terms of morbidity, mortality, conversion rate, hospital stay. A total of 181 p… Show more

“…Although in lobectomy group the average hospital stay was about 5 days, it was lower than that of open lung lobectomies in our hospital. In general, our results in terms of hospital stay after a U-VATS procedure were in line with those of other series reported in literature (17)(18)(19). The reduction of post-operative hospitalization was possible thanks to factors such as the early removing of pleural drainage and low incidence of postoperative complications, like pneumonias, atelectasis and respiratory or cardiac problems.…”

“…Indications can vary from minor procedures such as pleural diseases to more major procedures such as lobectomies [9]. If the patient presents with a chest drain in place, the same incision can be used to perform the procedure [11]. The main advantage of this minimal invasive procedure is reduction of postoperative pain and paresthesia, therefore, speeding the recovery.…”

“…Since then, thoracic surgery for pulmonary and non-pulmonary lesions have been reported with great success [ 9 , 10 ]. U-VATS has demonstrated its feasibility and safety compared to conventional techniques by several advantages: less blood loss during surgery, less postoperative morbidity and mortality, better cosmetic results, shorter recovery and hospital stay [ 11 ]. It keeps as the only limit, the giant masses exceeding 10 cm which sometimes impose the use of the conventional techniques: sternotomy or thoracothomy depending on the location of the mass.…”
