Abstract:USSR, an acronym for uninterrupted sustained silent reading, is a strategy developed to give students quiet time to practice silent reading and to increase their abi lity to read silently for longer periods of time. During this activity, everyone in the room reads silently, without interruption, for a specified length of time. This article highlights the essential features of USSR and describes how this strategy was adapted for use in mathematics classes and clinics.
