Unilateral galactocele in a male infant

Abstract: This was a 27th well documented case of galactocele in a male infant with typical clinical and histopathologic presentation. There are several hypotheses regarding etiology of the lesion, but it is likely to be multifactorial. Because of its extreme rarity, there are some difficulties in differential diagnosis and treatment options of galactocele in male infants.

“…Palpable breast masses are rare in the male pediatric patient, and sonography is the primary imaging modality [ 10 , 2 ]. MRI as a diagnostic procedure was performed in only four cases [ 10 , 12 ]. In infants, no unique mammographic findings have been observed; however, plain mammograms can show a water-fat level that is typical of galactoceles in adults [ 6 , 10 ].…”

“…14 Histopathological examination of the resected specimens showed cysts containing milk like fluid, lined by cuboidal to columnar epithelium where some of the epithelial cells had clear intracytoplasmic secretory vacuoles. 5,15 From the perspective of cytopathologist, when a case of male breast enlargement is encountered, cystic lesion as a differential diagnosis should always be kept in mind. Echo-lucency of the cyst in imaging and aspiration of milk from the cyst almost confirms the etiology of the cyst as galactocele.…”

“…Tomasi et al described presence of very rare histiocytes and lymphocytes at the cytological analysis of the aspirated milky fluid from galactocele of 26‐month‐old boy . Histopathological examination of the resected specimens showed cysts containing milk like fluid, lined by cuboidal to columnar epithelium where some of the epithelial cells had clear intracytoplasmic secretory vacuoles …”
