Unifying multi-level modeling: A position paper

Abstract: Multi-level modeling (MLM) as part of objectoriented modeling aims at fully utilizing the expressive power of multiple abstraction levels. While these levels where initially used to define domain-specific modeling languages, i.e. for linguistic purposes, the MLM community has long argued that there is much more to gain by tapping into ontological abstraction levels. While MLM is a rather specialized research field, there are now quite a number of different proposals. There is thus an opportunity to develop a u… Show more

“…Whilst all of these approaches have common features in terms of aiming to achieve abstraction and involving multiple type levels and representing types and instances, they differ in terms of the detail. Several researchers continue to aim to produce a unified foundation for the field (Jeusfeld and Frank 2021).…”

“…Unification: As noted in Section 8.2, there are a number of competing approaches which broadly agree that meta-concepts and levels are required, but differ in terms of the technical details. A key challenge remains to unify these as described in Jeusfeld and Frank (2021).…”
