The potential of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is enormous in tackling worldwide environmental and energy issues in the face of increasing risks associated with climate change and energy scarcity. Nevertheless, the economic competitiveness of hydrogen production is hindered by the challenging operating conditions in acidic environments, resulting in a lower unit cost compared to alternative energy sources. Hence, numerous global research endeavors persist in enhancing the efficiency of essential components in PEMWE systems, specifically the porous transport layer (PTL). Additionally, investigating the interface between catalyst layer (CL) and PTL, which is directly associated with system performance, is imperative for future sustainability and cost reduction. This review focuses on the analysis of fabrication techniques, materials, and structural configurations to enhance the performance of PTLs. Additionally, we suggest the use of self‐supported catalysts as potential solutions to enhance mass and charge transfer at the interface between CLs and PTLs, hence facilitating the production of hydrogen on a wide scale. In the last section we provide an overview of the future trajectory and potential of next‐generation PEMWE in the context of efficient hydrogen production.

Hydrogen is a favored alternative to fossil fuels due to the advantages of cleanliness, zero emissions, and high calorific value. Large‐scale green hydrogen production can be achieved using proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs) with utilization of renewable energy. The porous transport layer (PTL), positioned between the flow fields and catalyst layers (CLs) in PEMWEs, plays a critical role in facilitating water/gas transport, enabling electrical/thermal conduction, and mechanically supporting CLs and membranes. Superior corrosion resistance is essential as PTL operates in acidic media with oxygen saturation and high working potential. This paper covers the development of high‐performance titanium‐based PTLs for PEMWEs. The heat/electrical conduction and mass transport mechanisms of PTLs and how they affect the overall performances are reviewed. By carefully designing and controlling substrate microstructure, protective coating, and surface modification, the performance of PTL can be regulated and optimized. The two‐phase mass transport characteristics can be enhanced by fine‐tuning the microstructure and surface wettability of PTL. The addition of a microporous top‐layer can effectively improve PTL|CL contact and increase the availability of catalytic sites. The anticorrosion coatings, which are crucial for chemical stability and conductivity of the PTL, are compared and analyzed in terms of composition, fabrication, and performance.

Efficient electrochemical energy conversion technologies, such as fuel cells and water electrolyzers, require high current densities to lower the capital cost for large-scale commercialization but are often limited by mass transport. In this study, we demonstrated exceptional electrochemical performances in proton electrolyte membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs) creating micropatterned pore channels in the porous transport layer (MPC PTL) using a picosecond laser. This approach yielded an impressive performance of 1.82 V @ 2 A• cm −2 , which is better than commercial PTL of 1.90 V @ 2 A cm −2 . The significant performance enhancement is attributed to the micropatterned porous channel structure, facilitating the efficient expulsion of oxygen bubbles and input of reactant water. This work provides valuable insights for the design of PTL responsible for biphasic transport in electrochemical energy conversion technologies.
