Uniform trapped fields produced by stacks of HTS coated conductor tape

Abstract: The trapped magnetic field profile of stacks of GdBa2Cu3O7−x superconducting tape was investigated. Angled stacks of superconducting tape were magnetized and found to produce very uniform trapped field profiles. The angled stacks were made of 12 mm × 24 mm solder coated tape pieces and were bonded together following a brief consolidation heat treatment. Layering multiple stacks together and adding a ferromagnetic plate beneath the samples were both found to enhance the magnitude and uniformity of the trapped f… Show more

“…The obtained results are relevant also for different applications, such as levitation [17], or electric motors based on the diamagnetic behaviour of a bulk HTS [18]. The results can help understand the behaviour of tilted stacks, which were observed to provide good homogeneity and strength of the field [19]. Similar patterns of currents are observed in magnetic shields, which can be used to decrease demagnetisation [20], especially open magnetic shields made of short pieces of tapes [21].…”

“…The measurements are performed using a scanning Hall probe magnetometry system, described at [19]. In the case of measurements with the angle of 0 • , the sample is placed in a holder directly under the scanning probe, both visible at the bottom of Fig.…”

“…In most part of the published works the superconducting material was arranged in the form of coils; however, bulk superconductor with trapped field can also be used for electric machines [4][5][6]. Stacks of 2G tapes have been proposed as a potential substitute of bulk superconductors [7][8][9]. The literature also presents the 2G tapes stacks in several different applications, like: cables [10][11][12][13], rotational electric machines [14][15], superconducting levitation [16][17][18][19], etc.…”

“…So, in this paper, we will systematically study the trapped field demagnetization of a partially coupled stack with consideration of resistance between tapes under a time-varying alternating cross-field by minimum electromagnetic entropy production 2D method (MEMEP 2D). Soldered self-supporting stacks have been already experimentally constructed in 26,27 , which did not experience mechanical issues. However, cross-field demagnetization on these stacks has not been studied.…”
