Thermodynamic irreversibility is well characterized by the entropy production arising from nonequilibrium quantum processes. We show that the entropy production of a quantum system undergoing open-system dynamics can be formally split into a term that only depends on population unbalances, and one that is underpinned by quantum coherences. This allows us to identify a genuine quantum contribution to the entropy production in non-equilibrium quantum processes. We discuss how these features emerge both in Lindblad-Davies differential maps and finite maps subject to the constraints of thermal operations. We also show how this separation naturally leads to two independent entropic conservation laws for the global system-environment dynamics, one referring to the redistribution of populations between system and environment and the other describing how the coherence initially present in the system is distributed into local coherences in the environment and non-local coherences in the system-environment state. Finally, we discuss how the processing of quantum coherences and the incompatibility of non-commuting measurements leads to fundamental limitations in the description of quantum trajectories and fluctuation theorems.

Quantum correlations for anonymous metrology

We introduce the task of anonymous metrology, in which a physical parameter of an object may be determined without revealing the object's location. Alice and Bob share a correlated quantum state, with which one of them probes the object. Upon receipt of the quantum state, Charlie is then able to estimate the parameter without knowing who possesses the object. We show that quantum correlations are resources for this task when Alice and Bob do not trust the devices in their labs. The anonymous metrology protocol moreover distinguishes different kinds of quantum correlations according to the level of desired security: discord is needed when the source of states is trustworthy, otherwise entanglement is necessary.

Partial coherence and quantum correlation with fidelity and affinity distances

A fundamental task in any physical theory is to quantify certain physical quantity in a meaningful way. In this paper we show that both fidelity distance and affinity distance satisfy the strong contractibility, and the corresponding resource quantifiers can be used to characterize a large class of resource theories. Under two assumptions, namely, convexity of "free states" and closure of free states under "selective free operations", our general framework of resource theory includes quantum resource theories of entanglement, coherence, partial coherence and superposition. In partial coherence theory, we show that fidelity partial coherence of a bipartite state is equal to the minimal error probability of a mixed quantum state discrimination (QSD) task and vice versa, which complements the main result in [Xiong and Wu, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 51, 414005 (2018)]. We also compute the analytic expression of fidelity partial coherence for (2, n) bipartite X-states. At last, we study the correlated coherence in the framework of partial coherence theory. We show that partial coherence of a bipartite state, with respect to the eigenbasis of a subsystem, is actually a measure of quantum correlation. a family of resource quantifiers such as robustness monotones and norm-based quantifiers, etc.
