Unified theory for perfect absorption in ultrathin absorptive films with constant tangential electric or magnetic fields

Abstract: The maximal absorption rate of ultra-thin films is 50% under the condition that the tangential electric (or magnetic) field is almost constant across the film in symmetrical environment. However, with certain reflectors, the absorption rate can be greatly increased, to even perfect absorption (100%). In this work, we explicitly derive the general conditions of the ultra-thin absorptive film parameters to achieve perfect absorption with general types of reflectors under the condition that the tangential electric… Show more

“…According to conditions of CPA and laser as shown in our paper, this material with sample thickness d = 43.673 m can act as a CPA laser. Then we might as well make this thickness equal to 14 radii of the cylinders are given as r 1 = 0.16a, r 2 = 0.48a, then we achieved the permittivities of the cylinders as ε 1 = 1.33 + 0.11i, ε 2 = 1.07 − 0.054i with both gain and loss from Eq. (A4) with m = 0 and m = 1.…”

“…This can also be understood from Eq. (14). For such a medium with a real refractive index, both the numerator and denominator of det(S) are complex functions of frequency and they do not vanish for any real frequency.…”

“…The energy flux flows from the right to the left inside the slab, indicating that the lossy metasurface absorbs waves from both sides, while the metasurface with gain radiates toward both sides. In this sense, the functionality of PT-symmetric metasurfaces is a pair of coherent perfect absorption or lasing [60,61], denoted as a CPA-laser pair, as illustrated in Fig. 2…”
