Unified Balance Scale: Classic psychometric and clinical properties

Abstract: Conclusion:Although further studies are needed to generalize these results to different samples, to confirm its fall risk estimation capabilities and to improve its usability, the Unified Balance Scale presents itself as a psychometrically sound outcome measurement tool to evaluate the effectiveness both of fall reduction plans and of rehabilitation interventions aimed at improving balance.

“…Similarly, the UBS that explored both static and dynamic balance was significantly improved in the VGT group, with differences between the groups. This new balance outcome measure covers all of the relevant aspects of balance, exhibits good psychometric properties and avoids the well-known ceiling effect characteristic of other balance scales [38]. Additionally, the UBS was more suitable for detecting differences among the groups compared with the CB&M.…”

“…Following the round two vote, only one measure (Mini Balance Evaluation Systems Test [Mini BESTest] [29]) reached the 70% threshold for forwarding to round three. However, to promote discussion the group agreed to forward two additional measures that achieved sufficient scores by at least 50% of panel members (the Short Physical Performance Battery [30] and Unified Balance Scale [31]). As such, three measures were forwarded to round three and fifteen measures were excluded.…”
