Ungulate migrations of the western United States, Volume 1

Abstract: Over many years, numerous agency biologists, wardens, students, and postdocs have contributed thousands of hours into planning, collecting, and analyzing the data that pertain to each of the herds described in this report. Many staff and students with Infographics Lab at the University of Oregon Department of Geography were involved in map design and production. These included research assistant Joanna Merson, and the following students:

“…The study area is the migratory range of two populations of female mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) within the Baggs herd of Wyoming [23]. In keeping with previous studies [25][26][27], these populations are respectively referred to as the northern and southern Atlantic Rim herds (herein NAR and SAR herds, respectively).…”

“…These data originated from radio-collar tracking of female mule deer in the NAR and SAR herds over nine years (2005-2006; 2008-2010, 2015-2018). Migration initiation days were identified using the method of net-squared displacement [34], and full descriptions of the migration data, including initiation dates, can be found in Kaufman et.al (2020; [23]).…”

“…housing, agriculture, energy). The maps of movement corridors and important areas produced by MM (see maps in Kauffman et al, 2020) provide science products that managers can use to triage or prioritize key habitats so that impacts on animal populations are avoided or minimized. For example, managers might limit the amount of disturbance allowed in high‐use corridors or areas, target them for habitat improvement projects, or prioritize specific private parcels for land protection programmes (Tack et al, 2019).…”

“…The Idaho mule deer movement data are considered sensitive and have not been released by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. The Red Desert to Hoback migration corridors are available at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9O2YM6I (Kauffman et al, 2020). The model fitting R code, including a vignette illustrating this approach, is archived at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6828966 (Nuñez, 2022).…”
