Unfolding Participation. What do we mean by participation – conceptually and in practice

Abstract: The aim of the Unfolding Participation workshop is to outline an agenda for the next 10 years of participatory design (PD) and participatory human computer interaction (HCI) research. We will do that through a double strategy: 1) by critically interrogating the concept of participation (unfolding the concept itself), while at the same time, 2) reflecting on the way that participation unfolds across different participatory configurations. We invite researchers and practitioners from PD and HCI and fields in whi… Show more

“…While participatory approaches have been used in HCI for many years, the definition and perception of participation vary significantly [42,73]. In practice, PR and PD in HCI often overlap, which is why some authors also use the term "participatory design research" [42].…”

“…The aim of this special issue is to continue and contribute to the debate around the conceptualisations and understandings of participation in Participatory Design (PD) and related areas of human-computer interaction (HCI) research, recently invigorated by Vines et al (2015), Halskov and Hansen (2015) and Saad-Sulonen et al (2015). Ongoing transformations in ITmediated participation in contemporary societies are challenging us to explore the changing nature of participation in IT design.…”

“…The design practice has mainly been recognized for its focus on the production of concrete design objects (Margolin, 1995). The core motivation of PD is to generate more qualitative environments and to produce critical alternatives, not products per se (Gerrard and Sosa, 2014), although, from the original Scandinavian approach onwards, PD has coupled its political engagement with the formation of design objects (Saad-Sulonen et al, 2015).…”

“…The conceptual model of design is diverging (Jones, 1979), while the recognition of the strategic value of contemporary design is growing. Similarly, in the field of PD, the orientation toward single design projects is widening to a model that also includes various types of participation related to decision-making, debate and empowerment (Saad-Sulonen et al, 2015).…”
