Unexpected Findings During Evaluation of Acute Pelvic Pain With Transvaginal Sonography

Abstract: Transvaginal sonography is the first-line imaging modality used to evaluate acute female pelvic pain in the emergency setting because of its accessibility, lack of ionizing radiation, and excellent ability to identify reproductive tract disorders. Although the intent of transvaginal sonography is to evaluate the reproductive organs, imaging of adjacent pelvic structures is an important part of every transvaginal sonographic examination. Gastrointestinal, urologic, and vascular disorders incidentally scanned on… Show more

“…Nonradiologists performing ultrasound may be more focused on the uterus and ovaries as typical sources of pelvic pain and may incorrectly assign abnormal pelvic ultrasound findings to the reproductive organs. Recent studies have highlighted nonovarian pathology can be mis-assigned to the ovary on transvaginal ultrasound [39 , 40 , 42] .…”

“…4 Transvaginal sonography is suggested as the first line imaging modality for reproductive age women with acute pelvic pain due accessibility, lesser ionizing radiation and efficiency in identifying female reproductive tract disorders. 5 Transabdominal approach in obstetrics and gynaecology is conducted to identify possible pelvic pathology or pregnancy in a less invasive manner. 6 The present study was conducted with aims and objectives to study the Transabdominal and Transvaginal Ultrasonographic findings of various pelvic masses, to know the sensitivity, specificity and reliability of Ultrasonographic Findings of pelvic masses, and also to know the sensitivity, specificity and predictive value of ultrasonography of Benign and malignant masses.…”
