Unexpected effects of donor gender on the storage of liquid plasma

Abstract: Contact activation may be triggered before Day 14, especially in plasma from females, and may progress as a result of the consumption of C1INH. The data suggest that lack of cold-induced contact activation may be an important quality criterion. To achieve this, plasma from male donors could be selected for transfusion and the storage time limited to 7 days.

“…Our study population was predominantly male and might have influenced our results because female plasma is known to be more prone to contact activation as shown by Norda and coworkers. 31 We evaluated plasma frozen within 1 hour of collection and the results from this study may not be representative of plasma prepared from blood that is held for a longer period of time after donation and before freezing.…”

“…As mentioned in the methods section the data presented in the present manucript were collected as a part of a study with the main objective to study complement kinetics [7]. This means that he present results could be considered to represent secondary end points and therefore should be veiwed with some caution.…”

“…Thawed FFP can be used up to 2 weeks if stored at 2-6 o C [15]. Previous regulations in Sweden allowed LSP to be stored for up to 42 days but current praxis is a maximum storage time of 7-14 days due to evidence that prolonged storage has detrimental effects on coagulation factor activity, overall coagulation function and the presence of some activation markers [7,[16][17][18]. The LSP used in the present study may therefore have different properties than the one currently available in clinical practice.…”
