Unequal Protection of Video Data According to Slice Relevance

Abstract: In this paper, we devise a procedure that mimics the behavior of a progressive video stream starting from a non progressive one such as H.264/AVC encoded video. This allows one to unequally protect the video data in an efficient way, according to their importance and the network state. The reported results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed approach in comparison to state-of-the-art methods for resilient transmission of H.264/AVC data. Moreover, the flexibility in terms of redundancy insertio… Show more

“…The slice sorting can also be done as an analytic process as described in [14], which explains the Slice sorting by relevance (SSR) algorithm and how it can be used to prioritize each slice. After the slice sorting in [14], different priority slice partitions are protected with RS codes.…”

“…Because the bit streams of different layers have different importance. Unequal error protection (UEP) and forward error correcting protection (FEC) are usually applied for the system according to the source significant information [3], [4].…”

“…An UEP is applied on different slices based on their importance. The slice importance is recognized by Slice Sorting by Relevance (SSR) technique, which determines contribution of slices on distortion of the GOP [6,7]. Although this technique provides a reliable performance for the compressed video, it applies a long delay due to sorting slices in one GOP.…”
