Unenhanced calf MR angiography at 3.0 T using electrocardiography-gated partial-fourier fast spin echo imaging with variable flip angle

Abstract: Although further technical refinements are required, this optimized UE technique may be used as a supplement to contrast-enhanced MRA particularly in patients with PAOD in whom venous contamination occurs frequently.

“…While several well-known non-enhanced MRA techniques such as Time-of-Flight (TOF)-MRA [22], phase contrast MRA [23], and Turbo-Spin-Echo (TSE) [18], [24], [25], have shown to be more or less inadequate for the investigation of PAOD, QISS-MRA has already shown satisfactory results in the assessment of the peripheral arteries. In comparison to CE-MRA, sensitivities ranged from 84.9% to 98.6% and specificities from 94.6% to 96.8% [11]–[13], [16].…”

“…Clinical evaluation of FBI in PAD patients (5–10) has demonstrated that the technique is susceptible to motion artifacts, with two studies reporting nondiagnostic results in as many as 47% of all cases (7, 8). In FBI, systolic and diastolic phase datasets are acquired sequentially, over the course of several minutes.…”

“…SPACE sequence can also mitigate flow and motion artifacts, prevent inflow effects and allow for signal contrast between different tissues to emerge (12). In recent studies, 3D SPACE sequence has been used for imaging of lower peripheral artery (13), central veins of the chest (9) and portal veins (14) with improved spatial resolution and speed. Since it is the relaxation properties of blood rather than flow that generate the signal contrast, the SPACE sequence can guarantee the visualization of the vessels and presence of stenosis and occlusion (9).…”
